Features: Grandma didn't suspect a thing; she just thought their teacher was strange, rambling on about how there was nothing to make a fuss over. Who didn't know that foggy weather wasn't safe for sailing? It was just because visibility was poor, right? Danwa secretly smirked, snatched the sandwich cake Grandma handed her, stuffed it into her backpack, and ran out of the "Admiralty Building."
Danwa left the building and headed toward the sea. Today was a day off, and there was no foolish business like measurements. She had successfully tricked Grandma with all her scientific jargon. However, her portable computer couldn’t go to the beach—not only was the fog thick, but what if she went into the water? That wasn’t something to joke about. It was the ultra-thin laptop Mom bought for her from the U.S.
Here’s what Danwa did: she ran to the Stevens’ house, which was right next to the pier. She left the computer there first and then went to the beach.
Danwa found Stevens. Stevens was at home, sorting out his fishing lines. Turns out, Stevens was also a fishing enthusiast. There was no way around it—every child who grew up by the sea loved playing in it. But Danwa didn’t want to tell Stevens her secret yet. She’d wait until she had something concrete before discussing it with him.
Danwa arrived at the pier, feeling light as a feather. Hey, the pier was stunning. The thick fog had obscured half of its silhouette. Usually, the small pavilion inside the pier stretching into the sea was visible, but now, in the fog, it appeared and disappeared like a mirage, as if hidden in a fairyland. Danwa walked into the pier, as if floating on clouds, her steps feeling soft and weightless.
The small staircase by the pier had already emerged from the water. Due to the dense fog, Danwa couldn’t see where the tide had receded. She had no choice but to wade into the water and explore as she went to see just how far it had gone.
