Nipple inversion can affect breastfeeding?

Patient's question:

The nipple is very deep recessed, only comes out when stimulated. Also, my breasts are quite large but the nipples are small. I'm planning to have a child and wonder if it will affect breastfeeding?

Doctor's answer:

Nipple inversion refers to a condition where the nipple does not protrude above the breast skin and does not protrude even when pulled. First, you can gently pull the inverted nipple out of the breast with your hands and hold it in place for a period of time. If this method is not effective, you can try the syringe suction method. Prepare a 10-milliliter plastic syringe, remove the outer casing from the front end of the syringe; pull out the needle core, turn the syringe upside down, and align the open end of the outer casing with the inverted nipple. Then, insert the needle core through the cut end of the syringe, gently suction, and use the negative pressure of the syringe to pull the inverted nipple out and hold it in place for 5-6 minutes. Repeat 1-2 times daily.
