(II) Engaging in a Wits Contest with Whore Espionage Agents
In early autumn of 1933, our unit entered the Lao Yingpan area. Upon arriving at the base, comrades from the Security Bureau immediately conducted a social situation survey in the vicinity to gather intelligence on enemy activities. During the reconnaissance, we discovered a woman in the area who appeared suspicious. There were no elderly, husbands, or children in her household, and her heavy Nanchang accent, along with the urban-style furnishings in her home, raised concerns. We reported this situation to the bureau. Based on intelligence we had previously gathered, we suspected that this woman was Bai Yuehua, a spy trained by the Nanchang Nationalist Party intelligence agency specifically for espionage work among. To further investigate, the Political Director Yuan Guoping and Director Zhang Chunqing personally decided to send me to spy on her, handing me four taels of silver and allowing me to approach her.
The reason I was chosen was due to certain favorable conditions I possessed. First, I could speak Nanchang dialect. Second, having spent three years as an apprentice in Ganzhou City, I was familiar with urban life customs and understood some of the slang, rules, songs, and card-playing etiquette of. Additionally, due to my experience interrogating many prisoners of war (captured during battles, who were subjected to strict reviews to identify spies, police, and officers among them), I had extensive knowledge of enemy forces. Thus, I approached the woman publicly as a Red Army cadre but feigned being a former officer of the Nationalist Party’s 59th Division, captured and handed over to the Red Army. I intentionally or unintentionally allowed her to see the insignia and badges of the 59th Division that I had preserved.
After some time, I observed that she genuinely did not suspect me to be a rural Red Army soldier and believed me to be a former Nationalist officer, relaxing her vigilance. I learned that she had been sent by the intelligence agency to gather military intelligence for the Jiangxi’s new counter-revolutionary "encirclement campaign" against the Soviet region. Deliberately expressing negative views on the Red Army, I lured the female spy into considering me a target of her operations. After gaining her trust, she revealed details about the enemy radio operator and another spy. Using these clues, we quickly broke up the spy ring, arresting three male and female spies, confiscating one small radio, one new printing press, and three pistols.
However, a minor complication arose during the handling of one of the spies. One of them was a military detective from the enemy forces. During interrogation, we discovered that he possessed significant intelligence about our army, so we decided to execute him immediately. That night, we took him to a cliff and prepared to execute him with a horse blade. Just as the blade was about to strike, the spy fought back desperately, broke free from his bonds, and leaped off the cliff. Without hesitation, I also jumped after him. The spy was stubborn indeed. After landing, he endured the pain and began to fight me. He was tall and strong, while I was much shorter, putting me at a disadvantage. The fight left me disoriented and in mortal danger. Later, acting on the spur of the moment, I clamped my hands firmly over his private parts, forcing him to scream in agony. No matter how he struck me, I did not let go. Finally, he collapsed from the pain. By then, I was exhausted to the point of collapse. Struggling to my feet, I picked up the fallen horse blade and, like a saw, made several passes at his neck before finally killing him. My own body was covered in blood.
When I returned to the bureau, the comrades were taken aback. I recounted the ordeal with a smile. Later, Director Yang Qiqing of the Execution Department even used this incident as an example of heroic combat and recounted it to the students during a training session at the Security Bureau.
