Features: Design is purposeful, creating value and solving specific problems through design. In the act of design, it is evident that design is a harmonious integration of art and science, formed by the interpenetration and combination of knowledge from related disciplines such as aesthetics, communication studies, marketing, psychology, and materials science. Therefore, beneath the seemingly artistic expression of design works lies a rich rational logic and rigor. Unique and reasonable concepts, aesthetic creativity in art, skilled techniques, and meticulous refinement of details ultimately create outstanding and effective design works.
Logo design is a design art that directly faces the public and emphasizes practicality, differing greatly from traditional art design. It is a product of the convergence of design, culture, communication, and the market. Excellent and inspiring logos are based on detailed work such as scientific research and analysis of design projects, an accurate understanding and judgment of the needs of the target audience, and other meticulous efforts. Therefore, successful logos inevitably become an important part of advanced productive forces in society.
Logo design also reflects the sociocultural characteristics and spirit of the era, closely related to contemporary humanistic trends and scientific technology, embodying the intellectual and cultural values of modern human society. In today's era of economic globalization, international exchanges are becoming increasingly frequent, international market competition is intensifying, and the rapid development of information and communication technology all contribute to logos influencing and developing each other in communication. The internationalization trend of logo design has become inevitable.
Currently, in the numerous logo designs in China, whether among college students or ordinary designers, there are widespread issues such as weak theoretical foundations, a lack of creativity and expressive ability, and insufficient confidence. This is manifested as: designs that only pursue aesthetic form (sometimes even failing to achieve beauty), disconnecting from actual social needs, and designs that remain solely on the personal artistic expression of the designer. On the other hand, there is a prevalence of copying concepts or imitating design techniques in logo design. These issues run counter to the intended goal of pursuing distinctive and unique logo designs.
At the current stage of rapid development in China's higher design education, with the industrialization of design education, the extreme expansion of enrollment has created a stark contrast and contradiction with the refined demand for talents in the market. How to cultivate designers with solid theoretical and practical skills as well as macro-control capabilities has become a major challenge for higher design education.
The writing of this textbook is based on the current practical realities of China's higher design education. By specifically organizing and clarifying the relevant theories and design methods of logo design, it is hoped that it will benefit designers in the industry and contribute to the development of logo design courses in higher education institutions.
