Patient's question:
During the early stages of pregnancy, my breasts have been constantly sore and swollen. I read that this is a normal symptom.Doctor's answer:
Hello, breast tenderness is one of the earliest signs of pregnancy, usually starting around weeks 4-6 and lasting throughout the first trimester (the first three months of pregnancy).Suggestions:
Hormonal changes during pregnancy can increase blood flow and alter breast tissue, which may make your breasts feel swollen, sore, tingly, or unusually sensitive to touch. This is normal and nothing to worry about.
Around week 8 of pregnancy, your breasts may also begin to grow and will continue to do so throughout the rest of your pregnancy. It’s normal for your bra size to increase by one or two sizes, especially if this is your first pregnancy. As the breast skin stretches, you may experience itching or even stretch marks. You might notice veins under the skin of your breasts and find that your nipples become larger and darker. After the first few months of pregnancy, your areolas—the dark circles around your nipples—will also gradually enlarge and darken.
To prevent skin irritation, choose a bra made of soft material with no seams near the nipples. Cotton bras are more comfortable and allow better airflow than synthetic fabrics.
