1. Talents must master a specialized skill.
The CEO of SWT Company is named Wolf. In recent years, the company's business has not progressed much, shareholders' wallets have not been fattened but rather thinned, and everyone is somewhat displeased, putting him under considerable pressure. Over the past few days, he has been preparing his performance speech for the upcoming board meeting, the topic being: "How to Keep His Job." Of course, this is the topic in his heart. The actual speech topic for the board meeting has not yet been decided.
Mr. Wolf was in his office, pulling down a large curtain on the wall to reveal a world map. He stood in front of the map, squinting his eyes. He squinted so hard he was almost falling asleep but still couldn’t figure anything out. He only noticed that the map was covered in flames, quite dazzling, but he couldn’t remember why so many flames were drawn on it. He had no choice but to call his secretary.
The secretary entered, holding a large notebook in her arms and a ballpoint pen in her hand, as if she were a voice-controlled typewriter, ready to record every word her boss said. Mr. Wolf wanted to ask, "Can you tell me why there are so many flames drawn on the world map in the office?" But as soon as the words left his mouth, they turned into a question: "Look, can you figure out what the flames on the map mean?"
The secretary replied humbly, "Those red flames are our company’s 'old high' (meaning the logo), the waste incinerator." Mr. Wolf thought to himself, "Oh, it’s the company’s old high—this performance review is really driving me crazy. But on the surface, he said, "Good for you, you’re quick and knowledgeable about business."
Inspired by the global distribution of the "flame old high," Mr. Wolf thought of the concept of the market and came up with an idea. The topic for his performance speech was settled: "Developing New Markets" (the market name would be asked to the secretary later). He asked the secretary quietly, "Are there any places where our company doesn’t have business?"
Hearing this question, the secretary perked up, thinking this was her chance to shine. She deliberately showed off in front of her boss, not even looking at the map to demonstrate her familiarity with the company’s business. She blurted out, "Chai na!" (meaning China in English).
"Chai na," Mr. Wolf repeated with a meaningful tone, a look of delight on his face. He snatched the ballpoint pen from the secretary’s hand and walked to the map, drawing a circle around the shape of China.
Mr. Wolf was a decisive and efficient CEO. Once he had a new business idea, he immediately assigned it to his subordinates for execution, leaving a strong impression of being decisive and highly efficient. In reality, only he knew that his entire focus was on being the CEO, with his brain’s hard drive almost entirely occupied by fostering loyal allies, eliminating rivals, and pleasing board members. Where was there any room left for company business? Moreover, compared to the matters in his mind, business was at most just some trivial matters—something that could simply be handed off to others.
After delivering his performance speech, Mr. Wolf immediately handed this trivial matter to the Human Resources Manager, Mr. Bentley, asking him to hire a suitable talent and appoint them as the company’s Chief Representative in China, responsible for preparing the establishment of a representative office in China.
