Features: With the development of the knowledge era, the traditional teaching design paradigm based on the industrial era and objectivism increasingly reveals its temporal and epistemological limitations, making it difficult to meet the needs of social and personal development. The traditional teaching design paradigm faces a severe challenge of reconstruction. To maintain vitality in the context of the times, teaching design research must consciously evolve in synergy with social development and actively respond to real-world challenges. Based on an examination of the developmental history and trends of the teaching design discipline, this book, with the characteristics of the knowledge era and its new requirements for talent quality as a reference, and with the aim of promoting learner development, constructs a teaching design framework for the knowledge era in response to the limitations of the traditional teaching design paradigm. The book argues that quality-oriented education, constructivism, and modern information technology are the three pillars for constructing a teaching design framework for the knowledge era, while continuous thinking is the unique mindset for teaching design research and practice. Learning environment design is the focus of the framework research, and user design is the operational model of teaching design. To this end, the book systematically elaborates on the connotation and role of the three pillars, discusses the connotation, characteristics, and application methods of continuous thinking, deeply explores the theoretical foundation of learning environment design, constructs a practical framework for learning environment design, discusses the construction and application of technology-based learning models, and elaborates on the profound reasons and operational methods for moving toward the user design model. The book consists of ten chapters:
Chapter 1: The Discipline Development Background for Constructing the Teaching Design Framework
Taking the history of teaching design in the United States as a blueprint, it examines the developmental trajectory of teaching design. From the four dimensions of ontology, epistemology, humanism, and methodology, it explores the characteristics of objectivism and constructivism, analyzes the typical features of teaching design paradigms based on objectivism and constructivism, and summarizes the current trends in teaching design research.
Chapter 2: The Temporal Development Background for Constructing the Teaching Design Framework
By comparing the differences between the information age and the knowledge era and clarifying the relationships among data, information, knowledge, and wisdom, it reveals the typical characteristics of the knowledge era. It constructs a biased model of the knowledge era's requirements for talent quality, elaborates on the connotation and educational metaphor of the model, and argues that the new requirements of the knowledge era for talent quality primarily manifest in higher-order abilities, especially higher-order thinking skills.
Chapter 3: Model Construction: A Teaching Design Framework for the Knowledge Era
Reflecting on the limitations of the traditional teaching design paradigm, it analyzes the definition, purpose, culture, factors influencing the design process, and the essence of the design process, dissecting the definition and characteristics of traditional teaching design and revealing the essence of the teaching design process. It reconstructs the definition of teaching design. On this basis, it proposes the fundamental concepts for framework construction, builds a teaching design framework model for the knowledge era, and reveals the underlying assumptions and prominent features of the model.
Chapter 4: Promoting Learner Development: The Purpose of Constructing the Teaching Design Framework
It analyzes the orientation of development and higher-order ability development, arguing that the construction of the teaching design framework should aim to promote learners' higher-order abilities (innovation, problem-solving, decision-making, critical thinking, information literacy, teamwork, tolerance, tacit knowledge acquisition, self-management, and sustainable development), especially higher-order thinking skills (innovation, problem-solving, decision-making, and critical thinking). It discusses the basic assumptions and implementation pathways of teaching design centered around the development of higher-order thinking skills.
Chapter 5: The Three Pillars of Constructing the Teaching Design Framework
It elaborates on the three pillars of the framework—quality-oriented education, constructivism, and modern information technology. It discusses the concepts of quality-oriented education, subject-centered education, and the new curriculum reform. It explores the origins and schools of constructivism, summarizes its ten core principles, reveals its knowledge metaphor, learning metaphor, and teaching metaphor, compares its ten differences with objectivism, describes the research framework of contemporary learning theories, constructs a keyword network for constructivist teaching design, and raises necessary caution regarding constructivism. It analyzes the metaphor and role of technology, compares two typical views of technology application, outlines the semantic network of the relationship between learners and technology, reveals the essence of technology integration into curriculum, describes the continuous role of technology in curriculum integration, and constructs an application framework for "using technology to support learning."
Chapter 6: The Continuum: The Mindset of Teaching Design
It proposes the unique mindset for constructing and implementing the teaching design framework—continuous thinking. It clearly defines and explains the concepts of continuum, continuous thinking, and teaching continuum, revealing the metaphors and characteristics they embody. It discusses the basic continua in teaching design and their cognitive level, types, and application features. It divides and describes the five groups of continua in teaching design in a visual manner, outlines the application curve of the teaching continuum, constructs an application model for the teaching continuum, and elaborates on the mindset perspective of the application model.
Chapter 7: Conceptual Framework: The Theoretical Foundation of Learning Environment Design
It analyzes and reveals the metaphor of learning environments, discusses the concept of learning environments, and categorizes their types. It discusses the constituent elements of learning environments and their relationships. It elaborates on multiple theoretical perspectives for understanding learning environments, explains situative cognition, activity theory, and distributed cognition theory, proposes an integrated theoretical framework model for learning environment design, and describes the purpose of learning environment design.
Chapter 8: Practical Framework: The Operational Understanding of Learning Environment Design
Building on the theoretical foundation of learning environment design, it proposes a possible practical framework for learning environment design. It discusses the motivation and types of research on effective teaching principles as the framework's foundational layer, elaborating on them as a technology-based application framework. It elaborates on the definitions/connotations and operational strategies of tasks, context, problems, resources and tools, knowledge construction, learning communities, interaction, and evaluation as the framework's core layer. It discusses the role transformation of teachers and learners and the reconstruction of the teacher-learner relationship.
Chapter 9: Promoting Higher-Order Ability Development: Constructing Technology-Based Learning Models
It explores the concepts of models and learning models, analyzes the purpose of technology-based learning models, and proposes a perspective for categorizing model types. It constructs a model for recognizing and judging the value of learning model types, analyzes possible orientations for learning model transformation, describes the ten expected characteristics and semantic network of learning model transformation, and explores the thinking framework for constructing technology-based learning models. It elaborates on the principles and methods for using technology to support autonomous learning, inquiry-based learning, collaborative learning, and reflective learning.
Chapter 10: User Design: The Operational Model of Teaching Design
It discusses the evolution process and types of design methods/models, understands the concept of user design, and reveals its significance. It elaborates on the profound reasons for moving teaching design toward user design. It discusses the concepts of reflection and reflection tools, proposes a meta-structural model for reflection tool development, defines and analyzes the types of structured and semi-structured reflection tools. It elaborates on reflection tools that promote meaningful learning, exploring the development of structured and semi-structured reflection tools from the perspectives of objectivist and constructivist teaching design.
This book can serve as a research reference for graduate students in educational technology and curriculum and instruction, as well as an advanced training material for teachers in various educational institutions. It is suitable for senior undergraduate students in educational technology to expand their reading, and for all educators concerned with educational informatization, especially those interested in teaching design research.
