Features: In recent years, spinal surgery technology has developed very rapidly. With the continuous advancement of modern materials science and computer technology, new surgical methods, perspectives, and spinal internal fixation devices have emerged, including the application of navigation and minimally invasive techniques. However, the success of spinal surgery largely depends on the surgeon's correct understanding of surgical indications, approaches, and fundamental surgical principles. Spinal Surgery Atlas is written by a group of internationally renowned experts in the field of spinal surgery, including designers of modern spinal internal fixation systems such as Professor Howard SAn, who designed the University Plate, and Professor Kiyoshi Kaneda, who designed the anterior spinal fixation system. This book is based on their extensive clinical experience and is written on the foundation of classic surgical techniques, supplemented by a large number of precise, clear, and easy-to-understand illustrations. The content is concise, accessible, user-friendly, and highly practical, with a strong emphasis on mastering surgical indications and preventing complications. Therefore, this book serves as an extremely useful reference for junior and intermediate orthopedic or neurosurgical doctors who are engaged in spinal surgery.
March 6, 2006 Preface to the Original Edition
This atlas covers all aspects of contemporary spinal surgery techniques. Over the past decade, spinal surgery technology has made significant progress, such as in fusion techniques, spinal internal fixation devices, cervical spine surgery, and minimally invasive techniques. The editors are deeply honored to have received the assistance of the outstanding medical illustrator Carole Russell Hilmer, who dedicated a great deal of time to providing us with beautiful illustrations that perfectly depict basic surgical approaches and current new technologies. The editors would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the authors of this book and the international authorities in the field of spinal surgery for their insights and professional expertise. The surgeries introduced in this book are organized according to relevant anatomy, indications, surgical procedures, and complications. The most important factor in the success of spinal surgery is selecting the right patients and mastering surgical indications. Rigorous surgical techniques are also crucial for achieving satisfactory results and avoiding complications. The editors have consistently emphasized these points throughout the book. We believe that this atlas will be valuable to orthopedic surgeons, neurosurgeons, and any beginner aspiring to delve deeper into the field of spinal surgery. We would like to thank Martin Dunitz for publishing this book and, in particular, Robert Peden and Yasmin Khan-Chowdhury for their contributions to this atlas.
Translator's Preface
With the increasing globalization of academic exchanges, spinal surgery technology in China has developed rapidly, gradually narrowing the gap with developed countries such as Europe and America. Although new internal fixation devices continue to emerge, the fundamental principles of spinal surgery have not changed significantly. This surgical atlas, written by internationally renowned experts in the field of spinal surgery, covers topics such as surgical positioning, spinal internal fixation and fusion, scoliosis correction, and the resection and reconstruction of spinal tumors. It begins with classic surgical techniques, provides comprehensive and easy-to-understand descriptions, highlights key points, and features exquisite illustrations, making it highly user-friendly. This book is an excellent reference for those engaged in spinal surgery. It was translated by clinical surgeons from the Department of Orthopedics at Zhongshan Hospital affiliated with Fudan University. While strictly adhering to the original content and layout, the translation also considers our linguistic habits. However, due to factors such as experience, there may be some translation errors and shortcomings, and we welcome criticism and corrections from fellow professionals. Finally, we would like to express our gratitude to the hard work of the translators, as well as the support provided by Patricia Callahan from LWW in the United States, Fudan University Press, and Martin Dunitz.
