Is nipple discharge breast cancer?

Patient's question:

I have breast cancer. After getting the disease, there was a lot of water leaking from my nipple, which made me feel very embarrassed and annoyed. I had to change my underwear frequently, which felt particularly troublesome. Since getting the disease, my breast has been swollen and uncomfortable, and I can feel a lump in my right breast.

Doctor's answer:

Hello, nipple discharge is an early clinical manifestation of certain breast cancers, especially intraductal carcinoma, and can exist alone even before a distinct lump forms. Intraductal papilloma is a condition that frequently causes nipple discharge and accounts for the majority of nipple discharge lesions. Among these, intraductal papillomas in the areola area are most common, occurring either singly or in multiple cases. The age distribution ranges from 18 to 80 years, with the majority occurring in the 30 to 50-year-old age group.
