Can physiological cysts affect fertility?

Patient's question:

Ovarian cysts were discovered in July 2009. Later, I have been taking traditional Chinese medicine. After each menstrual period ends, I go to the hospital for regular check-ups, but the cysts haven't changed much and remain the same. I don't feel any abdominal pain, but I do have excessive white discharge.

Doctor's answer:

An ovarian cyst is a type of ovarian tumor in a broad sense, and it can affect women of all ages, but it is most common in women aged 20-50. Ovarian tumors are common tumors of the female reproductive system with a very high incidence rate. Clinically, ovarian cysts often manifest as lower abdominal pain, discomfort in the lower abdomen, increased vaginal discharge, yellow vaginal discharge, vaginal odor, menstrual irregularities, and typically a solid, painless lump in the lower abdomen. Sometimes, sexual intercourse may cause pain. When the cyst affects hormone production, symptoms such as irregular vaginal bleeding or hirsutism may occur. The most common type of ovarian cyst in women of reproductive age is a functional cyst, which is caused by an excessive physiological response due to stimulation from the ovary itself or medication. Excessive acidification of the body is also one of the factors contributing to cyst formation. Generally, if the cyst diameter is less than 5 centimeters and there is no evidence of a tumor, it is usually a functional cyst, which can be closely monitored with follow-up examinations every 2-3 months, and the frequency of follow-up can be adjusted based on the situation. Currently, there is no specific medication for treating ovarian cysts, and active treatment does not affect fertility.
