Why is there still bleeding after surgery?

Patient's question:

On August 19th, I had an abortion procedure without anesthesia. After the surgery, I experienced intermittent bleeding for about 10 days. By the 30th, it had stopped completely. However, on September 2nd, I started having some pinkish blood, and by the 3rd, it was bright red, like my menstrual period.

Doctor's answer:

Hello! After an abortion surgery, bleeding may last for one to two weeks before stopping. The amount of bleeding should not exceed that of a menstrual period. Occasional abdominal pain is normal, as the uterus is still in the recovery phase and may cause contractions that lead to pain. The bleeding after an abortion varies from person to person. Some may experience little to no bleeding, while others may have no bleeding for a few days before discharging coffee-colored blood. Some may bleed for about a week after the surgery. Regardless of the situation, as long as the bleeding is not excessive and stops within about 10 days, it is considered normal.
