Is trichomoniasis serious?

Patient's question:

Do I want to ask about trichomoniasis? Is it serious? Will it affect pregnancy? How long can it be cured?

Doctor's answer:

Hello, the symptoms of trichomoniasis primarily include an increase in vaginal discharge, which may be light yellow, creamy white, or yellowish thin liquid, or yellowish-green purulent discharge, often with foam and a foul odor. In severe cases, the discharge may also contain blood. Most patients also experience itching, burning, and pain during sexual intercourse. Additionally, during urethritis, symptoms such as frequent urination, painful urination, and even hematuria may occur. The vaginal and cervical mucosa may appear red and swollen, with scattered spots or strawberry-like elevations, and there will be a significant amount of liquid or purulent foamy discharge. When the vaginal pH changes, it can easily lead to bacterial infections, triggering inflammation. This condition often occurs during pregnancy, before or after menstruation, or after childbirth. Trichomonads can consume sperm and also cause vaginal obstruction, both of which hinder sperm survival, potentially leading to infertility.
