The Yangtze River Basin includes seven provinces and two municipalities: Shanghai, Zhejiang, Jiangsu, Anhui, Jiangxi, Hunan, Hubei, Chongqing, and Sichuan. It covers 15.4% of the total area of China and has a GDP of approximately 40.3% of the national total (2005). It is China's largest river economic belt and the river basin with the greatest growth potential outside the southeastern coastal region. The main stem of the Yangtze River is 6,300 kilometers long, connecting rivers and seas, passing through China's eastern, central, and western regions. The entire basin boasts superior geographical, locational, resource, economic, and cultural advantages.
