How to deal with pubic bone pain in late pregnancy

Patient's question:

Nights of sleep discomfort due to pubic bone pain in the late stages of pregnancy, unable to turn over.

Doctor's answer:

Women who are pregnant have a normal distance of 4 to 5 millimeters between their two pubic bones. Once pregnant, the distance between them increases by at least 2 to 3 millimeters under the influence of hormones. Therefore, if the width between the pubic bones is less than 9 millimeters during pregnancy, it falls within the normal range and usually does not cause symptoms. Even if there is pain, it is not significant. However, if the distance between them exceeds 5 millimeters, it is considered excessive pubic symphysis diastasis, which can cause more severe pain.
Recommendations: If a pregnant woman develops pubic symphysis diastasis, mild cases may not require treatment. When pain is significant, it is advisable to rest in bed, preferably in a left lateral position. For those with severe pain, in addition to rest, a pelvic binder made of cloth should be used to tighten the pelvis and reduce pain. If the fetus is not too large and the symptoms are mild, the pregnant woman can deliver smoothly with minimal impact. However, if the fetus is large and the symptoms are severe, a cesarean section is recommended to ensure the safety of both mother and baby.
After the fetus is delivered, as the level of relaxin decreases, the pubic symphysis naturally closes and returns to its original state, and the pain will subside accordingly.
