Features: The author, Xia Yan (1900—1996), originally named Shen Duanshan, styled Duanxuan, was from Hangzhou, Zhejiang. He studied at university in Hangzhou in his early years and later studied abroad in Japan. In 1930, the League of Left-Wing Writers was established, and Xia Yan served as an executive committee member. That same year, he participated in organizing the League of Chinese Left-Wing Dramatists. He wrote plays such as Sa Jinhua, The Biography of Qiu Jin, and Under the Eaves of Shanghai, as well as the reportage The Contract Laborers. This book reflects the author's sympathy and compassion for his fellow countrymen, exposing the heinous crimes of Japanese imperialism.
