Why does luteal phase defect lead to infertility?

Patient's question:

Married for over two years, I have not been able to conceive. When I went to the hospital for a check-up, the doctor said it was due to my luteal phase deficiency, which makes it difficult to get pregnant. Does a woman's luteal phase function lead to infertility in women? Why is that?

Doctor's answer:

1. Inadequate LH peak during ovulation.
  2. Insufficient LH secretion during the luteal phase or inadequate pulsatile secretion.
  3. Insufficient FSH secretion during the follicular phase, with low levels of FSH and estradiol in follicular fluid.
  4. Abnormal steroid hormone receptors in endometrial cells, leading to poor responsiveness to hormones secreted by the corpus luteum, i.e., normal corpus luteum function but endometrial dysplasia.
Luteal phase deficiency is a major cause of infertility and habitual abortion, often characterized by kidney deficiency, liver stagnation, or combined blood and Qi deficiency, as well as phlegm and blood stasis obstruction. Therefore, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) treatment for luteal phase deficiency focuses on tonifying the kidneys, nourishing blood, and resolving liver stagnation. Among these, herbal formulas like Yu Gong / Pei Lin Wan are excellent choices.
