Represented by Du Qiong, the teacher of Shen Zhou, landscape painters who inherited the style of the "Four Masters of the Yuan Dynasty" remained active. The phenomenon of literati participating in painting and making it their profession quickly became a trend in economically prosperous Suzhou. Shen Zhou was the leader of the emerging "Wumen School of Painting." Building upon his study of the "Four Masters of the Yuan Dynasty," he traced his artistic lineage back to Dong Yuan and Guo Xi, while also exploring the "Northern School." He excelled at harmoniously integrating various opposing artistic elements, opening up a path of synthesis and expanding the horizons for the new development of literati painting. Meanwhile, his contemporary Zhou Chen continued to paint in the style of Li, Guo, Ma, and Xia from the Song Dynasty, but with a more refined and quiet approach, foreshadowing the style of Tang Yin. In flower-and-bird painting, Lin Liang used vigorous brushwork for ink wash and freehand brushwork, infusing his simple and unrestrained style with folk aesthetic sensibilities. In figure painting, Du Jin represented the genre, though he studied Li Gonglin from the Northern Song Dynasty, his work was more meticulous and elegant, tending toward secular tastes. This volume features twenty-two painters and one hundred nineteen works.
