[Editor's Recommendation] This book includes content such as psychological development and mental health, the causes of psychological disorders, the assessment of psychological disorders, and common mental health issues in different life stages. It is divided into eight parts and thirty-six chapters, covering the basic content of mental health and psychological counseling.
Part 1 consists of two chapters, focusing on major theoretical perspectives on human psychological development, basic concepts of mental health, characteristics of individual psychological development at different age stages, and key points of mental health care. Part 2 is composed of five chapters, emphasizing the causes of psychological disorders. The term "psychological disorder" is widely used but has diverse definitions, leading to different interpretations among mental health professionals and non-professionals. Even within the professional community, there is inconsistency in understanding. Therefore, Part 2 dedicates one chapter to discussing this issue. Overall, psychological disorders can be seen as the result of complex interactions among various biological, psychological, and sociocultural factors. Thus, the remaining four chapters in Part 2 discuss the significant roles of these three factors, as well as their interactions and theoretical models.
Part 3 focuses on the assessment of psychological disorders, using four chapters to introduce face-to-face diagnosis, physical examinations, commonly used assessment scales, and psychological tests. Part 4 includes six chapters, covering common mental health issues across different life stages. Most of these issues are not severe enough to constitute a diagnosis of a mental disorder or psychiatric illness; they generally fall under the category of developmental or adaptive problems. We briefly introduce the possible causes of these issues and why they may persist, describe their respective manifestations, and point out strategies and methods to reduce and overcome them.
Part 5 consists of three chapters, introducing mental health issues in groups, including certain common mental health problems in student groups that are not specifically discussed in Part 4, as well as psychological issues and health care principles in occupational groups and people with disabilities. Part 6 is divided into twelve chapters, covering basic knowledge of mental illnesses, including the etiology and pathogenesis of common mental illnesses, clinical manifestations and diagnosis, and principles and methods of prevention and treatment. Mental health professionals should be proficient in applying this knowledge, while non-professionals can also find many useful mental health-related information in this part.
Part 7 discusses psychosomatic disorders and psychosomatic diseases. "Psychosomatic disorders" and "psychosomatic diseases" are also referred to as "psychophysiological disorders" and "psychophysiological diseases," respectively, and are two major categories of physical abnormalities closely related to psychological factors and mental health. The final part of the book is on psychological counseling and psychotherapy, which is divided into two chapters and focuses on these overlapping forms of mental health services, particularly their techniques and methods.
