Features: The subjunctive is a unique expression form in Western languages. The subjunctive in Spanish is even considered one of the most challenging grammatical issues due to its complex usage and broad scope. Spanish language teaching has a history of over half a century in China, yet the subjunctive has always been taught based on the rough guidelines provided in grammar books. This book includes: an introduction to the subjunctive, the differences between the indicative and the subjunctive, the basic definition of the subjunctive, the tenses and conjugations of the subjunctive, the temporal value of each subjunctive tense, the classification of subjunctive usage, the rules of subjunctive usage, difficult issues in subjunctive usage, the use and examples of the subjunctive, comprehensive exercises and reference answers for the subjunctive. To facilitate Chinese students' understanding and mastery, the author has categorized the usage of the subjunctive into two major types—"indicating the unreal" and "indicating the real"—based on its usage characteristics. Building upon the existing rough guidelines, the author has supplemented several detailed rules. This book is not only suitable for undergraduate and advanced students of Spanish in China but also provides valuable reference for graduate students, translators, and teachers who are interested in the usage of the Spanish subjunctive. The book consists of five chapters: an overview of the subjunctive, the rules of subjunctive usage, difficult issues in subjunctive usage, and examples of subjunctive usage.
