What preparations are needed before pregnancy?

Patient's question:

I and my husband can only have one baby. I want to get pregnant this month. What preparations and precautions do I need to make? I am already taking folic acid.

Doctor's answer:

Pre-pregnancy checkup refers to the physical examination that couples undergo at a hospital before planning to have children to ensure the birth of a healthy baby and achieve eugenics. Pre-pregnancy checkups for men are equally important as those for women. Both partners need to undergo pre-pregnancy checkups to ensure normal pregnancy and the birth of a healthy baby.
For women, pre-pregnancy checkups typically include routine hematological tests, syphilis serological tests, HIV testing, rubella antibody tests, hepatitis B tests, cervical smear tests, and more.
For men, the most important part of pre-pregnancy checkups is semen analysis. It is also important to check whether you have had mumps in childhood, whether you have had cryptorchidism, testicular trauma or surgery, testicular pain or swelling, hydrocele, inguinal hernia, or urethral discharge. Pre-pregnancy checkups are best done 3 to 6 months before pregnancy. For semen analysis, it is best to have the test 2 to 7 days after intercourse, preferably earlier. If abnormalities are found, timely treatment can be administered.
For women, it is generally sufficient to have the checkup within one week after the menstrual period ends. It is best to avoid sexual intercourse during this time.
