Features: China is an ancient civilization with a long history, and our ancestors have left us numerous architectural relics. Here, there is the Great Wall, known as one of the world's wonders, as well as well-organized capital cities, magnificent palaces, sacred altars and solemn tombs. There are also mysterious temples, towering pagodas, naturally beautiful landscape gardens, and simple residential buildings, among others. They not only embody the ancient architectural culture of China but also record the politics, economy, culture, and science of ancient China, becoming a carrier of ancient history. This book introduces various types of architectural styles from different periods in Chinese history in a manner, and discusses architectural decorations as a separate topic. It not only reflects the extraordinary expressive power of ancient Chinese architecture but also, to some extent, reflects the spiritual world of the Chinese people.
China has been a multi-ethnic country since ancient times. Through ethnic identification in the 1950s and social and historical surveys of ethnic minorities within the country in the 1960s, it is now recognized that China has 56 ethnic groups in total. The Han ethnic group has the largest population, accounting for about 93% of the total population, and is the dominant ethnic group. The other ethnic groups, due to their smaller numbers, are collectively referred to as ethnic minorities. Historically, these ethnic groups have long interacted and integrated, jointly creating a splendid Chinese culture while retaining their own cultural characteristics. In terms of architecture, for example, Tibetan architecture is rooted in the unique cultural soil of Tibetan Buddhism. Although it has absorbed some forms and techniques from Han architecture, it has still formed and maintained its own system, characterized by grand scale, vivid colors, and a rough yet magnificent style. The Uyghur ethnic group has made significant achievements in Islamic architecture, which belongs to the world Islamic architectural system. Its designs are simple yet elegant, with a tranquil and contemplative quality. The Dai ethnic group, followers of Theravada Buddhism, has religious architecture heavily influenced by Myanmar and Thailand, giving it a light and lively style. Additionally, the architecture of other ethnic groups each has its own unique charm. They all take root in the land of China, enriching the overall landscape of Chinese architecture.
Now, following the traditional classification of ancient architecture, we will briefly introduce palace architecture, altar and temple architecture, tomb architecture, religious architecture, garden architecture, and residential architecture, and discuss architectural decorations as a separate topic.
