Features: Jia Pingwa (1952–), contemporary writer, originally named Jia Pingwa. Born in Danfeng, Shaanxi. After graduating from the Chinese Department of Northwest University in 1975, he served as an art editor at Shaanxi People's Publishing House and an editor for the literary magazine Chang'an. From 1982, he devoted himself to professional writing. He has held positions such as member of the China Writers' Association and vice chairman of the Shaanxi Branch of the Writers' Association. His works include short story collections such as The Child of the Army, Chronicles of Sisters, Mountain Notes, Wild Flames, Notes from Shangzhou, Before the Little Moon, December and January, The Heaven-Dog, Late Night Singing, Selected Short Novels of Jia Pingwa, and Self-Selected Works of Jia Pingwa. His long novels include Shangzhou, River State, Restlessness, The Ruined City, and White Night. His autobiographical novel I Am a Farmer is also notable. His essay collections include Traces of the Moon, Traces of the Heart, Traces of Love, and Self-Selected Essays of Jia Pingwa. His poetry collection Empty Space and Essays on Pingwa are also published. His short novel December and January won the 3rd National Excellent Short Novel Award from the China Writers' Association, and his short story Full Moon won the National Excellent Short Story Award in 1978. In 1988, he received the American Fei Ma Literature Award. In 1997, he was awarded the French Women's Foreign Literature Award. Jia Pingwa's novels depict the rural areas of Northwest China during the new era, especially the changes after the reform and opening-up. His works have a broad perspective, rich in the cultural and psychological dimensions of contemporary Chinese society, and are imbued with regional characteristics. His style is fresh, enduring, and natural.
