Features: Different health surveys tell us that in modern urbanites with fast-paced lives, regardless of social class, there is an increasing prevalence of "sub-health." Some health surveys indicate that the incidence of sub-health in China ranges from 45% to 75%, primarily affecting individuals aged 30 to 65, with middle-aged intellectuals and those engaged in mental labor being the main groups. The sub-health issues among adolescents are a cause for concern, while the sub-health problems of the elderly are complex and varied, often placing them in a state of chronic stress. Special occupational groups under constant stress also exhibit prominent sub-health issues. As for defining sub-health, it can be said to be a concept with rich and broad, including: physical sub-health, psychological sub-health, social adaptability sub-health, and moral sub-health. There have been numerous discussions both within and outside the field regarding sub-health, which are not elaborated upon in this book. In other words, modern urbanites are adapting to the ever-changing demands of work, interpersonal relationships, and environmental shifts by depleting their health. The stress and pressure people face during times of change are inevitable. The main causes of stress include: excessive tension and fatigue, unhealthy lifestyles and habits, the impact of environmental pollution, and adverse psychological factors.
As professional psychotherapists and psychological counselors, despite years of experience in counseling and therapy and having accompanied many clients through critical life stages, we still feel helpless and regretful. Our capabilities are so limited that we cannot attend to every person who longs to share their struggles. We also know that many who need and are willing to seek counseling lack the time or courage to visit a counseling clinic. This gave rise to the idea of compiling a small desk reference book for these busy individuals, so they can casually flip through it during their spare time, perhaps gaining some inspiration for psychological stress relief.
The title "Urban Life Stress Relief Methods" was selected by the publisher's editor and assigned to us. When we discussed this idea with experts after a national psychological academic conference, they were in complete agreement. The book's approach was determined as follows: (1) A group of professionals compiled and simplified common stress relief methods used in counseling and therapy, emphasizing readability and practicality. (2) We invited employees and managers from high-stress occupational groups to share the effective psychological stress relief methods they had accumulated in their actual work (referred to as "practical remedies"). This might be more practical and effective, correcting the tendency of some psychological professionals to engage in theoretical discussions without practical experience.
To achieve this, we inevitably faced some new challenges: submissions from different industries varied in style, making it difficult for the editor to unify the manuscript. Balancing authenticity with consistency, we eventually adopted a compromise approach, aiming to preserve the authors' original intent while presenting a more comprehensive range of psychological stress relief and counseling methods to the readers.
The book's features include: (1) Collective wisdom (people from various industries come together to address the same stress relief topic). (2) Special thanks to Professor Gao Tian, a nationally registered music therapist from the Central Conservatory of Music, who dedicated his time to creating the "Urban Life Music Stress Relief and Psychological Therapy" CD for this book. This greatly enhances the book's practical effectiveness, and readers will gradually appreciate its subtlety and effectiveness in use. (3) Many of the psychological counseling and therapy methods in the book were collected and organized by graduate students from the Medical Psychology program at Peking University's Health Science Center. We believe that after completing this book, they will also benefit from and improve their application of psychological knowledge.
It is worth mentioning that the stress relief methods described in the book have been repeatedly used and proven effective, but they may not be suitable for all situations, people, or contexts. Therefore, when using them, it is important to choose methods that resonate with you and are effective for your personal needs.
Given the rapid development of psychology as an applied field, we often refer to psychological counseling and guidance as a "developing discipline." Like any developing field, writing a book on it often leaves one feeling that certain content needs further updating and refinement. This is unavoidable, and we can only leave room for revisions in the future. As long as this book can inspire readers to create new personal stress relief methods and offer some enlightenment, we will be deeply satisfied.
