Features: Zhu Zhi Shan (1460-1526) was a Ming Dynasty calligrapher, styled Xizhe, and styled Zhishan. He also styled himself Zhizhi Sheng due to an extra finger on his right hand. He was from Changzhou (Suzhou), Jiangsu, born into a family of seven generations of officials. He was known as one of the "Four Talented Scholars of Jiangnan" (also known as the "Four Talented Scholars of Wumen") alongside Tang Bohu, Wen Zhengming, and Xu Zhenqing. From a young age, he was exceptionally intelligent and diligent in his studies. At the age of five, he could write large characters one foot square, and by nine, he was already composing poetry and prose, earning him the title of "genius child." By ten, he had read extensively and written magnificent articles with extraordinary talent. At the age of seven, he passed the county scholar examination, and at thirty-two, he passed the provincial examination. He served as the magistrate of Xingning and the assistant magistrate of Yingfu Prefecture. Due to his free-spirited nature and dissatisfaction with the corruption in the officialdom, he resigned from his post, returned to Suzhou, and spent his time associating with friends, hosting lavish parties, drinking wine to relieve his frustrations, and venting his indignation at the world. Zhu Zhi Shan combined the strengths of various calligraphers and led the fashion of his time, being one of the "Three Great Calligraphers of the Mid-Ming Wumen School." His calligraphy drew inspiration from the styles of Tang Yushen and Yuan Zhao Mengfu, and he was renowned for his skillful use of various brush techniques. His works are celebrated for their elegance, dynamism, and expressive power.
Zhu Zhi Shan was a witty and unrestrained man, brimming with talent, who loved to roam the mountains and waters without being with trivialities. Due to the countless amusing anecdotes and stories surrounding Zhu Zhi Shan, he was a rich source of inspiration for numerous theatrical works. He often appeared as a clever, eloquent, and helpful character in plays such as "The Three Laughs" and "Wang Laohu's Wedding Robbery."
In addition to his calligraphy, Zhu Zhi Shan left behind works such as "Record of Eradication of Bandits in Jianghai," "Chronicles of News," "Wild Records of the Nine Dynasties," "Early Tales of Zhishan," "Records of Floating Things," "Chronicles of the Old Monster," "Small Compendium of Su Materials," and "Collected Works of Huaxing Hall." He also compiled the "Chronicles of Xingning County." He passed away in the fifth year of the Jiajing era (1526) at the age of sixty-seven. Zhu Zhi Shan was buried in the ancestral tomb of the Zhu family near Hengshan in Suzhou, but over time, the tomb has been leveled by the passage of history.
