Fortress of Solitude

Author: Qian Zhongshu
Publisher:
Publish Date: 2002-06-01
Features: In this book, I wanted to write about a certain part of modern Chinese society and a certain type of people. When writing about such people, I never forgot that they are human, just human, with the fundamental root nature of barefoot, two-legged animals. The characters are of course fictional, but people with a penchant for research would certainly not miss the opportunity to make deductions or give free rein to speculations. This book took me two whole years to write. During those two years, I was filled with worries about the world and sorrow for life, often thinking of giving up. Fortress Besieged was first published in Shanghai in 1947, reprinted in 1948, and a third edition came out in 1949. After that, it was not reprinted domestically. Occasionally, I came across new editions of it, and those were all pirated copies from Hong Kong. I haven't seen the pirated copies from Taiwan, though it is said that there, it was a banned book.
