What is the reason for severe vaginal itching?

Patient's question:

I had an incredibly itchy vagina one day in 2017, unable to sit or lie down comfortably. When I went to the hospital for a check-up, the doctor said I had a fungal infection and gave me a single vaginal douching. After taking medication, the symptoms disappeared.
However, since then, I often feel a burning sensation in my vagina, an increase in vaginal discharge, and a burning sensation during urination. The outer labia also itch (especially at night).
Over the past two or three weeks, I’ve suddenly noticed that the area around my vaginal opening swells after each sexual encounter with my boyfriend! The next day, it’s back to normal!
What could be causing this?

Doctor's answer:

There is a certain relationship with your candidiasis. In addition to topical medication, you can also take oral medications such as fluconazole and itraconazole. Pay attention to treating both partners. Abstain from sexual activity during treatment.
