Patient's question:
I started having irregular periods last year. They were not regular, sometimes coming only once every two months. Last week, because of discomfort in my lower abdomen, I went to the hospital for a check-up. The ultrasound revealed an ovarian cyst. I am very worried and would like to ask what could cause an ovarian cyst. What kind of help I am looking for: How is the cyst formed?
Doctor's answer:
A cyst is a benign disease, which can grow on the surface of the human body or inside the organs. A cyst is a benign, sac-like mass that develops within a specific organ of the body, with its contents being liquid in nature. The causes of cyst formation are highly diverse. The etiology can be congenital genetic:- Hair follicle cyst: Previously known as 114-degree sebaceous cyst, it is inherited in an autosomal dominant manner.
- Multiple sebaceous cysts: Inherited in an autosomal dominant manner.
- Dermoid cyst: Present from birth due to congenital development.
- Bronchogenic and thyroglossal duct cysts: Caused by congenital developmental abnormalities.
- Midline penile cyst: Caused by congenital developmental abnormalities.
- Erythematous carbuncular cysts: The etiology is unclear, with some reports suggesting an autosomal dominant inheritance.
For new liquid-like cysts, milia, and epidermoid cysts, the primary forms have unknown causes, while secondary forms are commonly seen in conditions such as epidermal blistering disorders, congenital ectodermal dysplasia, and delayed cutaneous leaf necrosis post-exfoliative surgery.
