Once, there was a couple who had no children. Later, the woman sought help from a fairy. The fairy gave her a seed and told her to plant it in the ground. The woman planted the seed in a flowerpot, and soon it sprouted a bud. When the bud bloomed, a beautiful little girl sat in the center, no bigger than the woman's thumb. They called her "Thumbelina." During the day, Thumbelina used tulip petals as boats and horsehairs as oars to row in a bowl filled with water. At night, she slept in a cradle made from half a walnut, with rose petals as her blanket. One night, an ugly toad snatched Thumbelina and took her to the swamp. The toad wanted Thumbelina to marry his son. When Thumbelina woke up, she found herself on a huge lily pad. She refused to marry the ugly toad. With the help of a small fish, she left the swamp and drifted downstream on the water. The lily pad carried Thumbelina drifting along, but suddenly, she was caught by a giant beetle. The beetle flew her to a large tree. He told his companions, "I want to marry her as my bride." The beetle was mocked by his friends, and feeling ashamed, he decided to release Thumbelina. Thumbelina left that old tree covered in beetles.
