What position to sleep in during pregnancy

Patient's question:

Hello, I am 6 months and 19 days pregnant. The doctors and friends around me have reminded me to sleep on my left side as much as possible now, but when I sleep on my left side, I always feel short of breath and like I’m gasping for air. On the other hand, sleeping on my right side feels much more comfortable, and my sleep quality is also higher. I’m wondering if sleeping on my right side will affect my baby’s position?

Doctor's answer:

In the second trimester of pregnancy (4-7 months), it is important to protect the abdomen and avoid direct external force. If the pregnant woman has excessive amniotic fluid or is carrying twins, a side-lying sleeping position should be adopted, as this can make the woman more comfortable and other sleeping positions may cause compression symptoms. If the pregnant woman feels heavy in her legs, she can adopt a supine position and use a soft pillow to slightly elevate her legs.
