Why is the period long after giving birth and getting an IUD?

Patient's question:

After giving birth and having an IUD inserted, my menstrual flow is very heavy, but by the end it's only a little bit and it lasts for about a week. Is it normal for the period to last at least half a month like this?

Doctor's answer:

After a cesarean section, it is generally recommended to wait for 3-6 months before inserting an intrauterine device (IUD), while after a vaginal delivery, it can be inserted after 3 months. However, it is essential to rule out pregnancy first. Usually, the IUD is inserted 3-7 days after the menstrual period ends.
Three days before inserting the IUD, sexual intercourse should be avoided. For the first half month after insertion, sexual intercourse, (bathing in a tub), and heavy physical labor should also be avoided. Women who have had an IUD inserted should have follow-up check-ups at the hospital in the first, third, and sixth months after insertion, and at least once a year thereafter.
