Why is there still blood in the vagina 42 days after childbirth?

Patient's question:

Why is there still blood in the vagina 42 days after childbirth?

Doctor's answer:

Postpartum Day 42, vaginal bleeding still occurs. If the vaginal bleeding volume exceeds 500ml within 24 hours after fetal delivery, it is called postpartum hemorrhage. Postpartum hemorrhage includes three periods: from fetal delivery to placenta delivery, from placenta delivery to postpartum 2 hours, and from postpartum 2 hours to 24 hours, with most cases occurring in the first two periods. Clinically, it manifests as sudden and heavy bleeding from the birth canal or persistent small amounts of bleeding. In severe cases, shock may occur. It may also be accompanied by symptoms such as dizziness, fatigue, sleepiness, poor appetite, diarrhea, edema, milk blockage, hair loss, and chills.
