This spirit is both the driving force behind the continuation of civilization and the foundation of human existence. Let knowledge be tangible, let thoughts be touchable; to possess knowledge is indeed a blessing!
On July 9, 2001, at noon, as ordinary university students packed their backpacks and left the classroom, a special and open "university" quietly began its lectures. Its uniqueness lies in its educational philosophy: "Renowned scholars and experts from around the world delivering lectures on science, humanities, and social sciences." Its mission is to "gather intellectual elites, share educational resources, spread modern culture, and promote the spirit of science and humanities." Its pursuit is to balance rationality with practicality, authority with avant-garde ideas, pursue academic innovation, encourage individual thought, emphasize accessibility to all, and value interactive communication." Its goal is to "construct common knowledge of the era and enjoy a life of wisdom."
Its openness is demonstrated by its policy of no entrance exams or qualifications, with no age or identity restrictions—"a passion for knowledge" being the sole requirement for enrollment. So, which "university" is this? The "100 Great Lectures." Where is the "100 Great Lectures"? On Channel 10 of China Central Television (CCTV). Advanced television technology has provided humanity with a shortcut, allowing us to connect so closely with knowledge! The names of Chen Ning Yang, Tsung-Dao Lee, Samuel C. C. Ting, Zhou Ruchang, Ye Jiaying, Bai Chunli, Li Yining, Feng Jicai, and Long Yingtai echo on the stage bathed in light and shadow, transmitting the spirit of humanity. This spirit is the driving force behind civilization's continuity and the foundation of human survival. Let knowledge be tangible, let thoughts be touchable, and let scholars from around the world, in the sacred hall of light and shadow, share in this experience—with knowledge, indeed, comes true happiness.
After a thousand sunrises and sunsets, the greatest achievement of "100 Great Lectures" has been over 700 heavy-duty tapes. Seven hundred forty-five-minute segments may seem lengthy for a television program, especially when they record the essence of human thought. How can we further promote and preserve these intellectual treasures? We thought of publishing—a way that allows for both collection and in-depth study. With the strong support of China University Press, we have selected the content of 500 lectures to create CDs, published them in series, and also released nearly 30 related books to meet the diverse intellectual needs of knowledge lovers. China University Press has called this "big move" a "great achievement" for 2004, and we owe them deep gratitude for their hard work.
To our audience and readers, let us shake hands in the transmission of knowledge!
