Does having sex two days before the start of your menstrual cycle cause a delay in your period?

Patient's question:

Does having sex two days before menstruation cause a delay in the period? Isn't the days before menstruation considered a safe period? We used condoms, but our period is really delayed by several days and hasn't arrived yet. Is it because of the sex that caused the delay, or are we pregnant? I'm so worried.

Doctor's answer:

If your menstrual cycle is usually normal and you haven't used contraception during sexual activity, then it's possible that you could be pregnant. You can test with morning urine tomorrow to see if you are pregnant. If you're not pregnant, if you're feeling discomfort in your lower abdomen now, it might be that your period is coming.
