Features: The Classic of Mountains and Seas is one of the earliest geographical works in China about myths and legends. Among our ancient classics, none are as magnificent and extraordinary as The Classic of Mountains and Seas. It is not only a masterpiece of historical geography but also a treasure trove of mythology.
Traditionally, it was believed that The Classic of Mountains and Seas was written by the great Yu and Bo Yi during the Xia Dynasty. However, modern researchers believe that the book was compiled between the early Warring States period and the early Western Han Dynasty, with contributions from multiple authors. The earliest extant version of The Classic of Mountains and Seas was edited by Liu Xiang and Liu Xin father and son during the Western Han Dynasty. Over the centuries, it has been annotated by numerous scholars, resulting in various versions circulating in the world.
The book consists of 18 volumes, divided into The Mountain Classics (5 volumes), The Sea Classics (8 volumes), The Great Wilderness Classics (4 volumes), and The Classics of the Inner Sea (1 volume). The Classics of the Inner Sea records approximately 100 countries, 550 mountains, 300 waterways, and their geographical relationships, as well as the customs, folklore, and important products of these regions. It also documents more than 140 historical figures and their activities or genealogies.
In summary, its content covers many aspects of ancient Chinese geography, history, mythology, ethnic groups, minerals, medicine, and religion, making it an important source for studying the early societies of China. The mineral records in it are among the earliest related documents in the world, particularly valuable. Additionally, the numerous myths and legends in The Classic of Mountains and Seas have provided ample inspiration for later literature. Stories such as Xiwangmu, Kua Fu chasing the sun, the battle between Huangdi and Chiyou, and Jingwei filling the sea have not only nourished Chinese poetry and literature for thousands of years but also continue to resonate with modern hearts.
Undoubtedly, The Classic of Mountains and Seas is a rich cultural heritage of China.
