How to calculate the safe period?

Patient's question:

If you have sex during your safe period and sperm enters, will you get pregnant? Do you need to take emergency contraception?

Doctor's answer:

The ovulation period is the time when a woman releases an egg, usually around the 14th day of her cycle. It is the fertile period, so having intercourse during this time increases the chances of pregnancy. After an egg is released, it can survive in the uterus for about 3 days, while sperm can survive in a woman's uterus for about 5 days. Therefore, the 5 days before and after the ovulation period are considered fertile windows. The other times are relatively safe periods.
