Is it okay to take emergency contraception once every one and a half months?

Patient's question:

I am separated from her, usually seeing each other only once every two months. The earliest we've met was also after a month and a half. Is the medication frequency considered high? Could it cause a missed period? Doctor

Doctor's answer:

Contraceptives should not be taken more than twice a month and no more than three times a year. Taking contraceptives may lead to infertility. The side effects of contraceptives can include symptoms similar to early pregnancy, irregular vaginal bleeding during menstruation, shortening of the menstrual cycle, excessive or insufficient menstrual flow, breast swelling, palpitations, flushing, lower back pain, abdominal pain, headaches, and increased vaginal discharge. If taking contraceptives results in excessive or insufficient menstrual flow and increased vaginal discharge, treatment is generally not required. However, if other symptoms appear, it is best to visit a hospital for examination.
