Features: The inaugural "2005 Shanghai International Urban Sculpture Biennial" was exhibited simultaneously at Xujiahui Green Space and Mingyuan Culture and Art Center in Shanghai. During the exhibition, Mingyuan Culture and Art Center organized a series of public lectures on public art and urban sculpture, providing ordinary citizens with the opportunity to learn about public art and engage in face-to-face exchanges with domestic and international sculptors, art critics, and related scholars participating in the exhibition, which garnered positive social response. To complement the exhibition, the Urban Sculpture Biennial Organizing Committee also invited experts and scholars from fields such as architectural environmental planning, philosophy, aesthetics, sociology, law, and cultural and art criticism to conduct in-depth discussions on topics like urban sculpture, public art, urban culture, and urban construction in the form of papers and interviews. This expanded the discussion on public art beyond a relatively narrow scope, encouraging more people to participate in the conversation.
The five sections—on-site, lectures, papers, interviews, and reports—together with over 300 sculpture works, form the main structure of this book, allowing the 2005 Shanghai International Urban Sculpture Biennial to be presented to a broad readership with detailed visual and textual content. The book conducts in-depth discussions on urban sculpture, public art, urban culture, and urban construction in the form of papers and interviews, expanding the conversation on public art beyond a relatively narrow scope and encouraging more people to engage with the topic.
