Patient's question:
I noticed bleeding on December 18th after having sex with my partner, and the bleeding lasted for 4 days. At first, the blood was bright red and the amount was quite significant, similar to what I experience during my menstrual period. Besides the usual lower abdominal discomfort I've always had, I felt no other discomfort. However, I had my menstrual period on December 3rd, which lasted for 7 days and ended on December 9th. On December 9th, I also had unprotected sex and took the emergency contraceptive pill (Yutong).I only started having sex for the first time in November. Previously, my menstrual cycle was irregular, and I often experienced amenorrhea for half a year or even a year. Without medication, I usually did not get my period. On December 3rd, it was the first time I had my period after being amenorrheic for half a year, and it lasted for 7 days. I think it wouldn't count as a regular menstrual period.
Doctor's answer:
Hello: According to your description, it may be ovulation bleeding.During the mid-cycle, i.e., the ovulation period, a temporary decline in estrogen levels causes the endometrium to lose hormonal support, leading to partial shedding of the endometrium and resulting in regular vaginal bleeding, known as ovulation bleeding. In traditional Chinese medicine, it is referred to as "intermenstrual bleeding."
Treatment
1. Western medicine treatment: Diethylstilbestrol 0.25–0.5 mg per day, starting 3 days before ovulation and stopping 2–3 days after the bleeding stops.
2. Traditional Chinese medicine treatment: Liuwei Dihuang Wan, Gujing Wan, and Xuefu Zhuyu Wan.
Prevention and Care
1. Pay attention to menstrual and postpartum health care, maintain external genital hygiene, and prevent pelvic infection.
2. Keep a calm mood and avoid excessive stress.
