Can you still have sexual life if you suffer from vaginitis?

Patient's question:

Hello! Unintentionally developed vaginitis, can I still have sexual life? What should my husband cooperate with for treatment? Urgently looking for a reply! Thank you!
First follow-up question: Initially, it was found that there were molds in the vaginal discharge. After three months of treatment, I went for a follow-up check, and both tests showed normal vaginal discharge values (at the same time, I still felt a slight itching sensation in the inner vulva). The doctor then said it was bacterial vaginosis. Is this judgment correct? My husband occasionally has itching in the external genital area. How should it be treated? Thank you!

Doctor's answer:

Can patients with vaginitis have sexual intercourse?
There are two common types of vaginitis in women of childbearing age: one is trichomoniasis, caused by Trichomonas vaginalis. It can be transmitted directly through sexual intercourse or indirectly through public places such as swimming pools or medical devices. The main symptoms are grayish-yellow frothy vaginal discharge, accompanied by itching of the external genitalia and vagina. The other type is candidiasis, caused by Candida albicans, characterized by external genital itching and white, curd-like vaginal discharge. These are the superficial harms of vaginitis.
In fact, after developing vaginitis, especially these two types, sexual intercourse should be strictly avoided. If the condition is mild, long-acting or short-acting oral contraceptives can be chosen. If the condition is severe, especially trichomoniasis, it is best to use condoms. Condoms can prevent direct contact between the penis and the vagina to avoid cross-infection. Additionally, if not handled properly, the harms of vaginitis can extend beyond these issues, potentially leading to infections in other female reproductive organs, such as pelvic inflammatory disease, adnexitis, or cervicitis.
This also varies from person to person. The most important thing is for patients to recognize the harms of vaginitis. With active treatment and maintaining good hygiene habits, vaginitis can be completely cured.
