Features: The 13th International Academic Conference on World Chinese Literature was held at Shandong University in September 2004. The publication of this proceedings was supported by the Shandong University International Academic Conference Fund and the Special Fund for International Conferences of the School of Literature and Journalism at Shandong University. In November 2003, the conference organizing committee issued a call for papers based on the topics determined by the Academic Committee of the Chinese World Chinese Literature Association, and within six months, over 80 papers were received. The topics of this conference were proposed by the Academic Committee of the Chinese World Chinese Literature Association last November. These topics include "Poetic Systems of Chinese Literature in a Global Perspective," "Cultural Vitality and Ethnic Characteristics of Chinese Literature," "Hometownness and Transcendence in Chinese Literature," "Identity Writing in Chinese Literature," "Chinese Literature History and Narrative Strategies," "Building the Discipline of Chinese Literature Sources," "Modern Transformation of Tradition and Overseas Chinese Literature." These are all topics of concern in the field of Chinese literature in recent years and form the cornerstone of the discipline of World Chinese Literature. The papers included in this proceedings were originally not marked as belonging to any specific topic. My reading was based on the focus of each paper, and I categorized them under the respective topics for introduction.
