When is the most appropriate time to have an abortion, and which abortion method is better to choose

Patient's question:

I had my period last month on November 18th, and now I might be pregnant. However, the conditions are not yet right for us to have a child, so I want to have an abortion but don't know when is the best time to do it, or which abortion method is better to choose.

Doctor's answer:

It is most appropriate to have an induced abortion within the first 10 weeks of pregnancy. Because the earlier the abortion surgery is performed, the simpler and safer it is; conversely, the surgery becomes more complex, and the postoperative recovery time is longer.
The commonly used early induced abortion procedures are curettage (negative pressure aspiration) and forceps aspiration. The former is suitable for women with pregnancies of up to 10 weeks, while the latter is suitable for women with pregnancies between 10 and 14 weeks. Within the first 10 weeks of pregnancy, the uterus is not too large; the fetus and placenta have not yet formed, generally requiring no cervical dilation, making it easy to remove the fetal tissue. The procedure involves mild reactions, minimal bleeding, a short operation time, and postoperative rest of 1–2 hours is sufficient to go home. Recovery is also quick, with minimal impact on the body.
Between 10 and 14 weeks of pregnancy, as the embryo grows gradually and the placenta has already formed, the uterus also expands. At this stage, simple curettage is not suitable for induced abortion, and forceps aspiration is required instead. This procedure is more difficult, involves more bleeding, and has a slower recovery time, with a certain impact on the body.
If the pregnancy exceeds 14 weeks, the two aforementioned induced abortion methods are no longer applicable, and hospitalization for labor induction surgery is necessary, which further increases the pregnant woman's pain and the risk of the surgery.
Therefore, pregnant women who need an induced abortion should strive to undergo negative pressure aspiration surgery within the first 10 weeks of pregnancy to minimize the pain of the abortion.
