How does the menstrual period recover after childbirth?

Patient's question:

Hello,
I have had a Caesarean section for two months now. The vaginal bleeding stopped around day 25, but brownish-yellow fluid has been leaking from my vagina ever since. It doesn’t resemble normal discharge, and I had a fungal vaginal infection before giving birth. Is this related to that, or is it normal after childbirth?
Could you please tell me what is considered a normal time for menstruation to return after childbirth? I am currently breastfeeding my baby.

Doctor's answer:

Generally, postpartum menstruation should not have a special odor or color. It may be that you have a bacterial infection.
The time after childbirth when menstruation resumes varies from person to person. For breastfeeding mothers, it can return as early as 8 weeks postpartum and as late as about a year and a half. Some may not have menstruation at all during the entire breastfeeding period, but most resume it around 6 months. Don’t worry.
