Patient's question:
Doctor,I would like to ask if my wife is 37 weeks pregnant, and the ultrasound shows that the fetus is smaller than expected and has excessive amniotic fluid. What should I do? Thank you!!!
Doctor's answer:
The deepest amniotic fluid pocket depth exceeds 80 mm or (and) the amniotic fluid index exceeds 240 mm, suggesting polyhydramnios. Polyhydramnios is commonly seen in patients with fetal malformations, chromosomal abnormalities, twins, gestational diabetes or diabetes complicated during pregnancy, maternal-fetal blood type incompatibility, fetal hydrops, and idiopathic polyhydramnios (30% of polyhydramnios cases remain unexplained). Mild or moderate polyhydramnios generally does not require treatment, and pregnancy should continue under close monitoring, with hospitalization if necessary. Due to the risks associated with chromosomal and umbilical cord blood testing, the decision to undergo these tests should be made by the treating physician and the patient.
