Features: This book is the first academic work to comprehensively, deeply, and systematically examine the socioeconomic changes in the post-1949 rural areas of southern Jiangsu from the perspective of the interrelationship between institutional reform and social change. Under the guidance of macro policies, the rural areas of southern Jiangsu experienced frequent institutional reforms of varying intensities, but these did not yield the expected outcomes anticipated by the institutional providers. At its core, this was because these reforms were not driven by the endogenous needs of regional socio-economic development. While accepting institutional reforms on a macro level, the southern Jiangsu region also actively explored effective ways to integrate these institutions with local conditions, successfully addressing the typically difficult issues of "path dependency" and institutional innovation in the process of institutional reform. This is precisely why the region's socio-economic development, though gradual, remained stable after 1949, avoiding the dramatic ups and downs often seen in other areas. Broadly speaking, the success experience of southern Jiangsu in regional socio-economic development after 1949 is also a "southern Jiangsu model." Studying the contemporary socio-economic changes in rural southern Jiangsu from the perspective of institutional reform and social change not only offers a novel perspective but also fills the gaps in previous academic research.
