Do you have to have surgery if you have an ovarian cyst?

Patient's question:

Detailed medical condition and consultation purpose: I have had an ovarian cyst for several years. This time, the ultrasound showed that the size and position of the uterus were normal, while the sizes of the left and right ovaries were 2815mm and 6931mm, respectively. Multiple unequal-sized anechoic dark areas were observed in the right ovary, arranged in a grid-like pattern, with the largest measuring about 2927mm, thin-walled and clear inside.
The doctor recommended surgery, but I haven’t married yet, so I’m very worried. Is this examination result very serious? Please advise! Thank you!

Doctor's answer:

Hello:
The only treatment for benign ovarian tumors is surgical removal. For cysts with a diameter of less than 5 to 6 cm, observation for 3 to 6 months is recommended. If the cyst continues to grow, or if the tumor has a diameter of less than 5 cm but is solid, surgical removal should be performed. For children and young, childless patients, unilateral oophorectomy or unilateral adnexectomy is often adopted. If the patient has bilateral benign ovarian tumors, the doctor may consider ovarian tumor enucleation to preserve as much ovarian tissue as possible, thereby maintaining menstrual and fertility functions. Laparoscopic surgery involves small abdominal incisions and rapid recovery.
