Postpartum maternal blood glucose 6.2 mmol/L, how to administer sugar with fluid infusion

Patient's question:

How to give sugar? Can insulin be used?

Doctor's answer:

Hello, if it's just mild hypoglycemia and the person is conscious, they can eat a few pieces of candy, some cookies, or drink half a cup of sugar water to quickly correct the hypoglycemia. Symptoms usually disappear within 10-15 minutes. After consuming these foods, they can eat some rice, steamed buns, or tofu to prevent a recurrence of hypoglycemia. If these methods are ineffective or the person becomes unconscious, they should be taken to the hospital immediately for emergency treatment, along with their regular hypoglycemic medication to help the doctor understand the condition. Patients with severe hypoglycemia should not be given food and should be taken to the hospital immediately. Once in the hospital, blood glucose should be measured immediately, and an intravenous injection of 50% glucose (20 mg) should be administered. After symptoms subside and consciousness returns, intravenous glucose infusion can be started to prevent a recurrence of hypoglycemia. This is especially important for patients with hypoglycemia caused by oral hypoglycemic medications, as they may still relapse into unconsciousness after treatment and require close observation for several days.
