What is the reason for the early menstruation and reduced amount after taking emergency contraception?

Patient's question:

I got my period on November 9th, took emergency contraception on the evening of November 19th, and then had my period again on November 23rd, but the flow was lighter than usual. Is it possible to be pregnant? If I don't take any contraception after this, when would my next period usually be—around the 23rd or the 9th?

Doctor's answer:

Hello: Your condition may be ovulation bleeding, and your next period should be around the 23rd.
During the mid-cycle, i.e., the ovulation period, a temporary decline in estrogen levels causes the endometrium to lose hormonal support, leading to partial shedding of the endometrium and resulting in regular vaginal bleeding, known as ovulation bleeding. In traditional Chinese medicine, it is referred to as "intermenstrual bleeding."
Treatment
1. Western medicine treatment: Diethylstilbestrol 0.25–0.5 mg/day, starting 3 days before ovulation and stopping 2–3 days after the bleeding stops.
2. Traditional Chinese medicine treatment: Liuwei Dihuang Wan, Gujing Wan, and Xuefu Zhuyu Wan.
Prevention and Care
1. Pay attention to menstrual and postpartum health care, maintain external genital hygiene, and prevent pelvic infection.
2. Keep a calm mood and avoid excessive stress.
