One month after taking medication for an abortion, my breasts are still swollen and painful, and the areolas have enlarged. How can this be resolved?

Patient's question:

I had very strong symptoms in the first month after conception, including breast tenderness, vomiting, and a rapid heartbeat. I underwent medication-induced abortion on November 12th, followed by a D&C procedure on the 15th. After the ultrasound, there were no issues detected, and my uterus had recovered well, although there were some blood clots in the cervix and some abdominal pain. The doctor prescribed blood-stimulating and blood-activating medication. After the bleeding stopped, everything improved.
However, now a month later, my breasts are still swollen and painful. The areolas are still enlarged, and the nipples are still easily hard and tender. The breasts are painful to the touch, and the symptoms have not subsided at all. I took a pregnancy test and got a single line, and I haven’t had any sexual intercourse. Why are my breasts still swollen and painful?
Doctor, what is going on with this?

Doctor's answer:

Generally, after pregnancy, hormone levels in the body may increase as a normal adaptive response to prepare for lactation. After an induced abortion, hormone levels in the body will take some time to decrease, and such symptoms should disappear after a period of time. However, it cannot be ruled out that the symptoms may be caused by underlying diseases of the breast. It is recommended that you visit a hospital for relevant examinations to ensure peace of mind. Wishing you good health.
