Remembering over a decade ago, the Guangzhou Daily launched a professional yet engaging science and technology column titled "New Uses of Traditional Chinese Medicine." The author of this column was my student, Yu Ziqiang, a pharmacist at Guangdong Provincial Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Yu has always been humble in his learning, diligent in pursuing knowledge, and persistent in writing. As far as I know, this column, which ran from 1987 to 1991, featured articles all written by Yu. It is worth mentioning that the compound traditional Chinese medicines discussed in the articles were mostly those commonly used by experienced TCM practitioners, experts, and physicians in our province. Not only did they possess practical insights and unique characteristics, but Yu also incorporated the latest modern research findings he had collected into his work, which justified the title "New Uses."
The single and empirical formulas introduced for each traditional Chinese medicine were those frequently used and proven effective by these renowned experts, embodying the characteristics of being "simple, convenient, cost-effective, and effective." At the invitation of the publisher, Yu compiled these into a book titled "Illustrated Dictionary of Practical Traditional Chinese Medicine" and sent the manuscript to me. Placing it on my desk, I found myself reluctant to put it down. The articles were concise, profound, easy to read, and enjoyable for both the learned and the layperson. Unlike general science and technology works, they contained in-depth knowledge of traditional Chinese medicine and offered innovative insights. Yu's academic achievements in this field are evident.
A few days ago, Yu came to my residence personally and asked me to write a preface for his work. I happily agreed, as this book is truly a rare and valuable new work in the field of TCM popularization. Introducing it to a wider audience for sharing is also a way for me to fulfill my role as a mentor.
