For literary enthusiasts who are native Chinese speakers but not very familiar with Joyce's works, a question may arise: Given the high praise and admiration this novel has received, its artistic quality must be extraordinary. Can we appreciate it through our own literature? From a perspective that takes art seriously, Joyce's seemingly haphazard yet deeply thoughtful construction in this masterpiece, his humorous and vivid character portrayals that cut to the bone even in the midst of laughter, his plot arrangements that soar into the heavens and resonate with each other everywhere, and his ever-changing yet perfectly fitting style—all are brought to life through his extremely precise language. James Joyce (1882–1941) was an Irish modernist novelist who spent seven years completing his masterpiece, Ulysses (1922). The protagonist of the novel, Bloom, is an advertising salesman for a newspaper in Dublin. The author uses numerous realistic details to describe the experiences of these three characters—a (wandering and troubled) petty bourgeois, his wife Molly, who revels in pleasure, and Stephen, a young student seeking a spiritual father—throughout one night. Essentially, the novel reflects the loneliness and despair of people in modern Western society. The author compares the protagonist of the novel to Odysseus (Ulysses) in Homer's epic The Odyssey and compares his wandering in Dublin to Odysseus's ten years of wandering. Joyce extensively employed the "stream of consciousness" technique in Ulysses, creating a new style and becoming a pioneer of modernist novels. He not only innovated in word choice and sentence structure but also used a large number of allusions, quotations, and myths. After the novel's publication, certain passages were deemed "obscene" and were criticized, leading to its long-term prohibition from being published in the United States and Britain. It was only in 1933 that this masterpiece was finally made available to readers in these countries. The translator has studied this book for many years, and this Chinese translation is not only faithful and fluent but also includes detailed annotations for numerous allusions, quotations, and other elements.
